Poll: Your Favorite Hayao Miyazaki Directoral Feature Film

Yeah, it's about time we got to these kind of polls. Ponyo is only four weeks away from its US release, so that means it's time for everybody to take stock of Hayao Miyazaki's long career. For this poll, we'll focus on his 10 directoral films, from Castle of Cagliostro in 1979, to Ponyo in 2008.

As always, vote on the poll at the right column. Have fun, and let's see who comes out on top this time. Oh, and I completely forgot about the pie! Ack! No pie this week, sorry.

Poll: Your Favorite Miyazaki Directoral Feature Film?

Lupin III: Castle of Cagliostro (1979)

Nausicaa of the Valley of Wind (1984)

Laputa: Castle in the Sky (1986)

My Neighbor Totoro (1988)

Kiki's Delivery Service (1989)

Porco Rosso (1992)

Princess Mononoke (1997)

Spirited Away (2001)

Howl's Moving Castle (2005)

Ponyo on a Cliff by the Sea (2008)

Spirited Away for me was well. This film is dear to me as it was the first Ghibli film that my wife and I saw together and we both had this crazy joy of discovery! Its like an oasis and a mirage all mixed up in one for me.

pretty hard to choose, especially among cagliostro, laputa, porco rosso and "sen". in the end i would say porco rosso is my personal favorite.

You haven't activated the poll!

Well, my vote would go to Spirited Away, no wait, Nausicaa... no, it must be Kiki or Totoro or Ponyo... Not to say that I don't like Laputa and Cagliostro, because I love these too! Help!!! I can't decide!

Yeah, Neo, check the right-hand column, just below the pics. Don't worry, you have 6 days to decide. Maybe it all comes down to rock-paper-scissors, best 3 out of 5?

Great comments from everyone. Feel free to gab away on this thread.

My first Miyazaki film was Mononoke, which I originally liked, but didn't love (made the mistake of watching with the English dub).

Spirited Away floored me, and I knew I had to see them all at that point.

Howl's was the only one I've seen in a theatre, and that was an amazing experience.

On closer inspection, my vote goes to.... Spirited Away!

I'm seeing Totoro neck and neck for the lead with Spirited Away. I think both movies are doing very well.

But where is the love for Castle of Cagliostro and Howl's Moving Castle, I wonder? I could make the case for either of those being Miyazaki's best directoral film. And they both fit at such opposite ends, in terms of style and content. But both movies are less accessible to the casual fan; both require some background knowledge of Miyazaki's career to grok.

Great insights so far. This is already the most popular poll on the site, so let's keep it up. We may have to do this once every month or two.

wps, i think my browser isn't displaying the numbers of votes correctly - hence my impression that totoro was doing poorly.
is there a way of polling people's opinions of rankings and relative merits beyond the single "best" film?
i'm sure others like me find it painful to single out just one film, and want to follow up with their second film that almost tied for first place (- and their third choice, etc!)

So hard to choose....
Depends on my mood for now - Howl's Moving Castle get's my vote, well maybe that and Spirited Away are tied. Then again...
